A WEARSIDE event proves the North East is the leading region for software, according to experts.
DrupalCamp saw 60 leading players in the software sector descend on Sunderland’s Software Centre.
The camp was the first of its kind in the UK, and Adam Hill, operations director at Consult and Design International Limited, a web company based in Sunderland, said: “Everyone who came to the event commented on the state-of-the-art centre and could really see the investment Sunderland is making in the industry.
“And this is reflective of the whole region – it really is stealing the march when it comes to software and technology.
“Innovation is the key characteristic in the open source, and Drupal community and the North East has a deserved reputation for this, earned by being at the forefront of technology that really did break the mould.
“The event, organised by the Drupal Community, was a chance to showcase the collaborative, open approach we have here – an opportunity to show people from around the world that we genuinely are ready to lead the way in this field.”
The North East Drupal Community is made up of evangelists of the open source technology.
Holly Ross, executive director of the Drupal Association, spoke at the event via video-call from Portland in the USA. She said: “With the investment taking place in software in Sunderland and the North East, there is an opportunity for the region to become a shining light in the open source software field.”
