A SUNDERLAND skipper sailed a super yacht down North East waters.

Captain Dale Smith brought the 55m long Sovereign to the Port of Tyne before berthing her at Newcastle City Marina, where she will stay until Sunday.

Dale was brought up in Sunderland before embarking on a career in yachting.

“Sailing Sovereign in to the Port of Tyne was wonderful,” said Dale “I have a great affection for the river, having studied as a marine engineer at South Shields College.

“It’s very special to be spending a little time here to revisit my roots. I would like to think more yacht owners will take the opportunity to visit this wonderful region.”

The privately-owned yacht is visiting the area as part of a trip around Scandinavia, Britain and the Baltics.
