CURIOUS Sunderland residents were in for a treat when they got to meet their new Mayoress.

Marie Porthouse – consort to husband and new mayor Stuart Porthouse – hosted the annual Mayoress at Home event yesterday.

And many city residents, voluntary groups and charities, jumped at the chance to join Mrs Porthouse for an afternoon of music and refreshments at the Civic Centre.

The winners of this year’s City Sings school choral competition – East Herrington Primary Academy Choir – performed in the council chamber before afternoon tea was served.

The choir who has held on to the top spot for a second year, previewed the musical programme they have been invited to perform at the Music for Youth National Festival in Birmingham next month.

“This has been a great opportunity for me to formally introduce myself as Mayoress to the people of our city,” Mrs Porthouse said.
