Sunderland lifeboat man trained for rescue missions

A WEARSIDE lifeboat volunteer is ready for action after completing his specialist training.
Jonny Lindsley, from High Barnes, Sunderland, travelled to the RNLI College, in Poole, Dorset, to complete his trainee crew course.
The 22-year-old, who also works as a delivery driver, took part in a series of simulated scenarios, covering team survival swimming, using a life raft in darkness and dealing with onboard fires.
He was also taught how to “abandon ship”, which involved a four-metre jump into water, and right a capsized inshore lifeboat.
Jonny, who volunteers as an inshore lifeboat crewman, said: “The lifeboat college is an excellent facility.
“I joined the charity with no previous maritime experience so this high level of training is essential to allow me to carry out my role as a lifeboat crewmember.”
The training took place in the Sea Survival Centre, which includes a wave tank and fire-fighting simulator, allows trainees to experience first-hand some of the scenarios they may encounter.
“The training we receive at the college makes sure we can carry out the job of saving lives at sea as safely and effectively as possible,” he said.
The training was funded by the Lloyd’s Register Educational Trust, an independent charity, as part of a five-year deal with the RNLI.
The additional funding of nearly £1million brings its total support to just over £1.5 million.
James Jamieson, Sunderland RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager, said: “The support given by The Lloyd’s Register Educational Trust is hugely important to the RNLI.
“We are extremely grateful that it has chosen to fund sea survival training, which teaches vital core skills to our volunteer crew.
“This training is central to allowing the RNLI and its volunteers to stay safe while on rescue missions.
“It equips volunteers with essential sea survival skills, providing them with the courage, poise and self-confidence to save lives even in the most perilous seas.”
