HUNDREDS of families got the seal of approval after passing community courses put on by SAFC’s official charity organisation.
The Foundation of Light’s Sir Bob Murray Graduation Day was held at the Stadium of Light as mums, dads and children completed the Family Learning Through Football scheme.
Club legend and Roker Park hero Marco Gabbiadini was also on hand to congratulate each family on their achievement as they took to the stage to formally graduate.
Run by the foundation, which is the registered charity of the Black Cats, the 10-week programme is run in primary schools and uses the power of football to engage families in activities that promote learning and achievement as well as helping them develop and build new skills and improve relationships.
In 2013, the programme worked with 2,000 families across the North East.
Mum Kelly Ferguson, from Silksworth, whose son Nathan attends New Silksworth Juniors, said: “We’ve had a fantastic time on the Foundation’s Family Learning course and today’s been the icing on the cake really.
“It’s great to be able to come to the Stadium of Light and have such a nice day out together, all because of the Foundation of Light.”
Michael Colclough, assistant head of life-long learning at the foundation, said: “I’d like to offer our congratulations to every child, parent and grandparent who attended today.
“It’s truly heart-warming to see so many happy faces celebrating their achievements together.
“On behalf of the Foundation of Light I’d also like to thank Sir Bob Murray who kindly sponsors this event, and Marco Gabbiadini who spoke at the ceremony and met those graduating today.”
