A SUNDERLAND girl hit the shops with a teen idol after winning a national competition.

Gabby Dixon travelled from her home in Pallion to Essex at the weekend after scooping a £500 shopping spree with Joey Essex.

The 17-year-old won the opportunity after entering Argos’ Gift For Santa contest, which ran in the ad break of ITV’s recent The Only Way Is Essex series.

Viewers were asked to tweet their gift suggestions for Santa, with the best nominations being announced live during the final ad break of the show.

Gabby said: “I couldn’t believe it when I saw my suggestion appear on the television screen after my weekly dose of Towie.

“I love the Argos Aliens, so it was great when they read out my idea.

“I chose hair straighteners because everybody loves a makeover at Christmas, so why wouldn’t Santa.” The competition was part of an advertising campaign which ran during four of ITV’s most popular television shows.

The other prizes included, backstage access with Keith Lemon at the Celebrity Juice studios, a trip to New York courtesy of The X Factor and a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Australia to experience the I’m a Celebrity …Get Me Out Of Here jungle first hand.

Carl Nield, head of brand marketing from Argos, said: “The campaign was a huge success.

“In total we received over 80,000 tweets during the competition.”
