AROUND three hundred fun-runners pulled on their trainers to race around Mowbray Park.

Eager youngsters and their parents and carers gathered at the start line this morning for the Big Mini Fun Run.

It’s the third year the event has been hosted by Active Sunderland as part of a weekend of running events, but perfect weather conditions meant it was the biggest turn out yet.

The one mile circuit is aimed at three to 10-year-olds who are invited to run, walk, jog or even skip the route.

Victoria French from Sunderland City Council said: “It’s fantastic to see an increase in numbers from last year. There’s a lovely atmosphere on the run.

“Not only does it complement this weekend’s programme of running, it’s a great way of introducing children to running as they get a proper start line, warm up and race number.”

The mayor of Sunderland, councillor Bob Heron, was on hand to start the race.

He was fresh from taking part in a charity zip wire from Wearmouth Bridge to Panns Bank, one in a number of events taking place in Sunderland this weekend, which also includes the Sunderland 10k and half marathon, a Steam Spectacular vintage vehicle event in Herrington Country Park and Sanctuary, a music, food and drink event in Sunderland Minster.

Coun Heron said: “There’s a great atmosphere in Sunderland this weekend, with plenty going on for people.

“The zip wire is great fun, you get an absolutely fantastic view down the Wear, right down to the fish quay and out to sea. You go about 30-40 miles an hour, then at the end it really speeds up.”

Speaking about today’s fun run he said: “This is a great event to get kids interested in fitness. It’s a good motivator for them.”
