A STRANDED duck had to be rescued from Silksworth Lake.

A crew from Sunderland Central Fire Station, in Farringdon, came to the bird’s aid in icy conditions.

The firefighters also freed a swan, which was trapped in the ice near to the shore, using a ceiling hook to crack the ice.

This picture was taken by Marie Copeland, of Queen Alexandra Road, who was passing the scene shortly before noon yesterday.

Crew manager Warren Mulvaney said: “We noticed a swan was stuck in the ice near the edge so we were able to crack the ice.”

“We then noticed the duck. We thought it was stuck to the ice so we squirted water on to the ice, but we realised it wasn’t stuck, it just could not stand up.

“We were told that it had been there for two days.”

The fire crew tried to use an inflatable hose but could not get it across the ice.

A rope was used to pull the duck to shore.

The animal was given to the RSPCA for treatment.
