A DIVE team’s dedication has paid off after its members lifted a host of titles at a competition.

Eleven members of Sunderland Amateur Swimming Club scooped accolades in the annual Bury Dragons Invitational.

The eight to 14-year-olds gave the club an overall win, securing 10 medals.

They included golds for Noah Glanville in the boys’ eight to nine-year-olds novice section, Abby Cass in the girls’ 10 to 11-year-olds category, Daniel Kitchen in the boys’ 12 to 13-year-old novice event and Chris Trotter in the boys’ 14 to 16-year-olds challenge.

Club bosses say the performance of the day was by Cameron Watt, who took part in his first competition since stepping up from the novice to intermediate category and set a personal best, posting the team’s highest score of the day with 166.9, scooping a silver in the boys’ 12 and under section.

Second places were awarded to Megan Milley, Emily Beadling and Shauna Fisher in their heats, a third given to Molly Crossley, and Gary Copeland given fifth place in his category.

The youngsters celebrated their victory Tom Daley-style, by jumping into the pool.

The competition was followed by a visit to Shipley, where 17 divers took part, placing the club in ninth place.

The team is now looking towards future competitions, including hosting the region’s best junior divers at their home venue – the Aquatic Centre, in Monkwearmouth – with the Northern Region Qualifiers on Saturday, March 23.

Divers successful in this event will qualify for the national finals to be held at the National Diving Centre in Plymouth – the base of Olympian Daley – on the weekend of May 4 and 5.

The team is open for six to 16-year-olds, with members joining up to four training sessions a week under the guidance of coach Steve Pattinson.
