DIAMOND couple Ellen and George Hope are proof that a relationship can last if you work at it.
The couple, of Aberdeen Tower in Lakeside Village, have celebrated 60 years together after marrying in 1954.
Ellen, 85, puts the longevity of their relationship down to hard work.
She said: “You have to put your heart and soul into it.
“It’s all well and good saying you will give and take in a relationship, but you actually have to for it to work.”
George, 83, has Alzheimer’s disease which the pair are tackling together.
They had a party with friends and family at the weekend to celebrate the milestone.
The couple met while Mrs Hope was working in her second job at the Grand Hotel.
George went into the hotel with friends and asked for Ellen to come over and get their bill, so he could talk to her.
“He didn’t even know my name for the first three weeks”, chuckled Ellen.
“It was my birthday and he asked to walk me home and we’ve been together ever since.
“I never thought it would last this long.”
