COUNCIL staff helped bring in a record £67,000 for Sport Relief.

Sunderland City Council’s Customer Contact Centre, based at the civic centre, acted as a volunteer pledge centre for this year’s charity extravaganza, with staff handling an estimated 2,500 calls and donations of approximately £67,000. Nationally, more than £51million was raised.

A Sport Relief event in 2012, saw volunteers at the centre handle 1,529 calls and co-ordinate donations of almost £46,000.

More than 100 council workers volunteered to cover 75 telephone lines between 6.45pm and midnight on Friday for people to ring and pledge their donations.

Volunteers joined in the fun too, with activities such as sporting bingo, fancy dress, face painting, balloon games and even a bake-off.

They were joined during the evening by the Mayor and Mayoress, Councillor Bob and Mrs Juliana Heron, as well as Sunderland City Council leader Councillor Paul Watson.

Coun Heron said: “I’m delighted that so many of our staff volunteered to take part and thank everyone from across the region who called our contact centre and pledged their support.

“All donations give vulnerable and disadvantaged people in the UK and across the world a much- needed helping hand.”

This is the sixth year running that council staff have been involved in taking telephone pledges and donations on Sport Relief and Comic Relief Red Nose Day.

Coun Watson added: “We are quite rightly proud of our staff who always do what they can to support events such as Sport Relief. Everyone who took part in this fantastic fund-raising event can be proud of their efforts, knowing that did their bit to help collect tens of thousands of pounds of donations.”
