CHARITIES handed Lotto funding could be in line for a national award.
Good causes in Sunderland received more than £4.4million in National Lottery grants last year, providing vital cash to arts, sport, heritage and community groups across the city.
Now the projects, along with other organisations which have received support over the past 18 years, have a chance to gain countrywide recognition for their work at the National Lottery Awards 2013.
The Foundation of Light, the official charity of Sunderland AFC, was given £890,000 to help more than 160 families in disadvantaged communities.
Lee Crosby, improving futures project manager at the group, said: “The funds that we were awarded have allowed us to set up a provision that will make a real difference to families in need in the Sunderland area.
“I think the National Lottery Awards are a great way of celebrating how the National Lottery supports community projects, and we look forward to entering.”
Elsewhere, £9,807 was handed to Sunderland’s Young People’s Bike Project to provide cycling experiences for people with disabilities.
Also, £9,860 was given to the Darussalam Education Trust UK to run a series of workshops and outdoor activities for young people and their parents on healthy eating, nutrition and parenting skills.
The National Lottery Awards recognise the unsung heroes, dedicated workers and selfless volunteers making use of Lottery funding.
They consist of seven categories – sport, heritage, arts, environment, health, education, and voluntary and charity – with the winners receiving a £2,000 cash prize and national recognition at a star-studded event broadcast on BBC1 later this year.
John Barrowman, presenter of last year’s awards, said: “The National Lottery raises £30million a week for good causes, and the awards are a great way of celebrating the life-changing difference these projects make to communities. National Lottery players in Sunderland should be proud of the difference they are making to people in the area.”
