anglers are to cast off to help raise funds to help pay for a life-changing operation for a two-year-old.

A fishing challenge has been organised in aid of triplet Derek Russell, of Washington.

The tot was born prematurely and suffers from cerebral palsy.

His family are hoping to raise enough cash to send him to the US for pioneering surgery to help him walk unaided.

Event organiser Anth Constable, 35, of Castletown, said: “I knew Derek’s dad and heard about his son’s health problems.

“Fishing is my hobby, and I thought I could help raise some money to help the family reach their target.”

Thousands of pounds have been raised since the Echo highlighted Derek’s plight earlier this year.

His family want to send him to St Louis Children’s Hospital in Missouri for a procedure called a selective dorsal rhizotomy to help improve his posture and balance, allowing him to lead a more normal life.

The operation will cost £60,000, and Derek’s dad, also called Derek, and mum Michelle are now trying to raise that cash.

Anth, a dispatch co-ordinator for a pharmaceutical company, said: “We want to get as many people as possible to the event.

“We hope it will be a huge success.”

The competition, being sponsored by Sea Angler Magazine, will take place on Sunday, January 12, with the weigh-in being held at the Wolsey Pub, in Millem Terrace, Sunderland.

Tickets are £10 for adults and £5 for juniors, who must be accompanied by an adult.

Registration will be between 11.30am and 1pm, with the contest taking place between 2pm and 6pm.

The boundaries are from Hebburn Marina to South Shields Pier and from Roker Pier to the Queen Alexandra Bridge.

Prizes will be handed out for the heaviest fish, and Penn League points are available.

Tickets are available from Rutherford’s Angling in Roker Avenue, Sunderland, Fishing Republic in Woodbine Street, Hendon, North East Tackle Supplies in Ryhope Road, Sunderland, and Moonfleet Angling in Gateshead.
