FLAGS are flying at half-mast at Sunderland in tribute to “one of the greatest”, Nelson Mandela.

The club, which has strong links with Africa, is a “legacy advocate” for the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

A minute’s applause will take place before Saturday’s home game with Spurs.

Club officials recently travelled to Johannesburg to mark the opening of the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory.

SAFC chief executive Margaret Byrne said: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Mr Mandela, a truly great man.

“The thoughts of everyone at Sunderland AFC are with the family of Mr Mandela, our friends and colleagues at the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the people of South Africa.”

Manager Gus Poyet said of the tribute planned for the Stadium of Light: “For us it was a must. (It will be) a special occasion. I think he deserves it because he was one of the greatest.”
