STRAW was left scattered along the A19 after a lorry hit a Sunderland bridge and caused rush-hour chaos.
A police spokeswoman said several bales had fallen from a truck on the northbound A19 this afternoon.
A clean-up operation got under way, but there was a knock-on effect to rush-hour traffic, leading to traffic queuing on the carriageway.
The lorry is believed to have clipped the bridge at the A19’s junction with the A183 Chester Road, leading to the straw scattering across the road.
Police arrived at the scene and redirected traffic into the outside lane while the road was cleared.
