Society getting in tune for solo recital by pianist

SUNDERLAND’S Pianoforte Society is hosting its next recital on Tuesday, February 4.

As part of its 71st season, the group will welcome classical pianist John Paul Ekins to perform.

The acclaimed ivory-tinkler has enjoyed international success, including second prizes in the Amy Brant, San Sebastian and Oxford international piano competitions.

He was also accepted onto the prestigious Britten-Pears Young Artists Programme, taking part in Lieder masterclasses with Dame Ann Murray, Ian Partridge and Andrew West.

Recently, he was also selected to appear in Making Music’s concert promoters’ network brochure for 2014.

As part of his Sunderland recital, he will perform Britten’s Holiday Diary, opus five and Brahms Opus 117 as well as pieces by Mozart, Liszt and Beethoven.

He will take to the piano at the society’s base at Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens.

Founded in 1943, the society hosts regular recitals each year, bringing world-class musicians to Sunderland.

A full subscription for a year, which covers six recitals, costs £55.

Alternatively, visitors can turn up on the night and pay for just one recital, costing £12 a time.

Under-16s can enjoy the music for free and students can get a discount of £6.

All the society’s shows start at 7.15pm.
