Six rescued after lift ordeal

SIX people had to be rescued by firefighters after getting stuck in a lift in a Wearside tower block in an early-morning drama.

Crews from Sunderland East fire station in Railway Row were called to Biscop House, in Villiers Street, in the East End around 2.20am on Tuesday.

“We had to isolate the lift and open the doors to get them out,” said crew manager Jez Hylton.

“By that time they had been in there for a while, so I think they were quite frightened.”
