YOUNG journalists have the chance to show they’re made of the write stuff with a new competition backed by the Echo.

Spark Magazine, based at the University of Sunderland is on the look-out for a young columnist.

The winner of the Write Here, Right Now competition will be able to write a column in the magazine as well as win £50 of iTunes vouchers.

To enter, would-be journalists need to write an article of 300 to 500 words on any topic of their choosing.

The only condition is that it has to capture the imagination of an audience aged 15 to 25 years old.

With thousands of copies printed and distributed across the North East, Spark is an ideal stage for aspiring young writers to make their voice heard.

The University of Sunderland is also offering schools and colleges mentoring and masterclass sessions to help them prepare.

The entrants will be judged by Echo deputy editor Richard Ord, editor of Spark Magazine, Adam Swainston and winner of last year’s Column Idol run by The Sun, University of Sunderland student Rebecca Stubbs.

Richard said: “The Sunderland Echo is delighted to be involved in this competition as we’re all about celebrating what is great about Sunderland and showing off what our young people can do. My advice to anyone entering is: be entertaining, be opinionated and be your-
self.”

Adam Swainston added: “The Write Here, Right Now competition is a great opportunity to get your work published and seen by thousands of readers. Not only can you express your creative flair and say something important, you’ll be getting invaluable experience that you can put on your CV or personal statem-ent.”

“But we’re not just doing this out of the goodness of our own hearts – we want to find the most talented young writers in the region and put them in our magazine to make it even better.”

Entries should be sent to
editor@sparkmag.co.uk.
The closing date is March 24.
