A CONTRACTOR is to be appointed to begin the rescue operation on storm-battered Roker Pier, after planning consent was granted.
Sunderland City Council is in the process of evaluating tenders to find the right contractor to restore the Grade II listed structure, and safeguard it against future North Sea weather.
“Following the planning process and the committee’s decision, the council is currently evaluating tenders for these important works,” deputy council leader Harry Trueman said.
“A decision on the contractor is anticipated within the next few weeks with a view to the contractor beginning their programme of works in mid-June.
“The works include below water repairs to the pier’s foundations, repointing its walls and renewing its decking in line with the original cobbled design. We are having to do this work when sea and wind conditions are expected to be more favourable during the summer.”
The council expects the pier to be closed for a period of time, but exact timings have yet to be announced, with the work completed by this winter.
