Seal woes for anglers

A SEAL has caused a stir among local fishermen.

The marine mammal, who has found a new feeding ground in the River Wear at Chester-le-Street, has become a hit with vistors – much to the annoyance of anglers.

Chester-le-Street and District Angling Club secretary Alan Horniman club said: “It is bad news for river fish and anglers are not amused.

“We are not happy to see it so far inland, as it can be really destructive. It takes mainly sea trout and salmon. They are very predatory and can eat up to 100 lbs of fish a day.”
