BLACK Cats fans across Wearside and Durham have been gripped by Sunderland cup final fever.

Seaham School of Technology held two lunchtime Sunderland AFC events to celebrate the team going to Wembley tomorrow.

Kelly Lodge, catering manager at the school, said the pupils are really excited about the forthcoming Capital One Cup Final against Manchester City.

She said: “The majority of the pupils are Sunderland fans and they are loving the whole thing.

“We decorated the hall in Sunderland colours and made special Sunderland cup cakes.”

The school also held a raffle where one lucky student won a football shirt.

To add to the fun the catering staff re-named some of the classic dishes, giving them a football theme. Fish and chips became ‘a goal post’, a side order was ‘perfect score’ and sweet and sour chicken became ‘the big dribble’.

Schools across County Durham and Wearside showed their support for the team by holding SAFC-themed events, including St Mary’s RC Primary in Sunderland where all the children and staff dressed in red and white.

Richard Avenue Primary School, in Barnes, also got into the mood as Sunderland mascot Samson the Cat made a visit to pupil’s assembly yesterday.

And tots and teachers at Fulwell’s Busy Bees Nursery cooked up red and white food to show support for Gus Poyet’s side.

The schools, along with scores of businesses, have taken part in the Red and White City campaign, a bid to turn Wearside the colours of SAFC ahead of the game and raise cash for the Foundation of Light.

Ken Teears, development director at the foundation, said: “It’s been fantastic to see Wearside turning red and white this week.

“The fact that so many businesses, schools and homes have shown their support for SAFC and the Foundation of Light has led to a real sense of community and I would like to thank everyone involved for making that possible.”
