HUNDREDS of protesters gathered in Durham city centre to demonstrate against the Government’s controversial bedroom tax.

Banners showing politicians in the stocks and chants of “Axe the tax” and “Tories out” filled Durham’s historic cobbled marketplace.

Around 300 people came together to loudly voice their opposition to the under-occupancy penalty.

Councillors and union leaders also lent their support to the campaign group.

Grahame Morris, Labour MP for Easington, labelled bedroom tax “perverse”.

He added: “Two-thirds of the 660,000 families affected by the bedroom tax are disabled households faced with losing £700 a year, with 220,000 families with children to be hit by the tax, as well as 140,000 working households on the lowest income also set to lose out.

“This is from a Government that promised to protect the vulnerable in society and make work pay.”

housands of campaigners joined marches in 51 towns and cities across the UK.

Critics have said the tax, which comes into effect next month, will hit the poor, vulnerable and disabled the hardest.
