SANTA Claus has ditched his sleigh and opted to hop on the bus this Christmas.

Ten drivers from operator Stagecoach North East have foregone their uniforms and dressed up as Saint Nick himself this festive period.

The effort is all for a good cause as throughout this month they will be raising cash for the North of England Children’s Cancer Research Fund and St Benedict’s Hospice, in Ryhope. The jolly bunch are also handing out gifts such as rock sweets, miniature reindeer and snowman bugs with a Christmas message.

Rob Taylor, driver at Stagecoach North East’s Sunderland depot, in Dundas Street, is head Santa this year and is driving the annual charity collection for the worthy causes.

He said: “It’s the best turnout yet for those getting in the Christmas, fund-raising spirit.

“Sunderland is a great depot, and it’s been a good laugh doing it all together.

“We don’t have a goal of what we want to raise at the moment, we’re happy with whatever the public decide to donate as it’s all for a good cause; but we do hope they dig deep.

“Christmas is a manic time, so we just want to cheer people up and raise some money for charity.”
