A WEARSIDE brewer is getting behind the campaign to turn Sunderland into a Red and White City by creating beer pump clips in SAFC’s colours.

Maxim Brewery, based in Rainton Bridge, Houghton, has released clips for its Samson and Lambtons beers which will be available to pubs throughout this month and into March.

Both beers were previously emblazoned on the red and white stripes of Sunderland when Vaux Brewery sponsored the team in the ’80s and ’90s.

The release of the clips comes as Sunderland prepare to face Manchester City in the Capital One Cup final at Wembley on Sunday and the club’s charity arm, the Foundation of Light, launches its Red and White City campaign today.

Its aim is to transform Wearside into a sea of red and white, with houses, shops, offices and schools in the week building up to the match with Manchester City.

Mark Anderson, managing director of Maxim, said: “There is a real buzz about Sunderland getting to play Manchester City in the final.

“It’s a possible fairytale story of the underdog going up against the current best side in the country.

“The pump clips feature the beers on old replica shirts reminiscent of when Vaux Brewery sponsored Sunderland in the seasons from 1985 to 1999.

“Of course, we don’t have the spare £1million per year it would cost to sponsor and supply the club – but it doesn’t stop the dreaming!”

The Foundation of Light will also be fundraising through the campaign with participants being asked to make a £1 donation to the charity.

The money can be collected by participating schools or businesses, or donated directly via a special Just Giving page, www.justgiving.com/safc.
Proceeds will be used to support the Foundation of Light’s wide range of sport and education-based programmes, which benefit more than 42,000 young people and families across the North East every year.

School and businesses interested in getting involved should contact the Foundation of Light on 551 5191.
