SAFC supremo Ellis Short has upped the stakes in football rivalry with a cheeky charity dare.

The Black Cats’ owner took a drenching as part of an online craze which sees people soaked with icy water and nominating others to do the same within 24 hours.

SAFC players Jozy Altidore, Adam Johnson, and Patrick van Aanholt have already braved cold showers as part of the challenge, where people donate to the Motor Neurone Disease Association or Macmillan Cancer Support.

Now the Texan businessman has accepted a challenge from Sunderland player Adam Johnson - being soaked at the side of the pitch at the Stadium of Light by centre-back pairing Wes Brown and John O’Shea.

He announces that the winger will be fined by the club and the proceeds donated to ALS - the American term for Motor Neurone Disease.

Ellis Short goes on to nominate his opposite number at Newcastle United, owner Mike Ashley, the club’s manager Alan Pardew and player Jack Colback, who controversially moved to the Magpies at the end of last season..

The ice bucket challenge started in America, where people donate to the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association.

ALS sufferer Pat Quinn, from New York, launched the campaign with the help of friend Pete Frates, a former Boston college basketball player who also suffers from the condition.

Frates is credited with helping the challenge go viral, alongside friend Corey Griffin – who sadly drowned in a car accident on August 16 – after he posted a video nominating friends and stars including US football player Tom Brady.

The craze has spiralled from there, with celebrities including Will Smith, Lady Gaga and David, Victoria and son Cruz Beckham all taking part.
