A CAMPAIGNING councillor has renewed calls for traffic measures to be introduced at an accident black spot after another smash.
A Suzuki motorbike collided with a Renault Scenic car at the A690 junction with High Lane, at Stoneygate, in Houghton, last Thursday.
The rider of the bike, a 31-year-old woman, was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for treatment on a suspected broken leg.
The car driver was not injured in the crash.
The accident followed another serious collision on Friday, December 21, when firefighters had to cut the roof off one car after a crash with another vehicle, as well as a number of other smashes in the past few years.
Now Independent councillor Colin Wakefield says he wants to see traffic lights installed at the junction to reduce the threat of accidents.
Bosses at Sunderland City Council say they are looking at the situation at the junction.
Coun Wakefield, who represents Copt Hill ward, has campaigned for years for the measures to be introduced.
He said: “How much longer have we got to wait until there is proper solution to this junction?
“There have been some serious crashes there, and we can’t go on like this.
“Funding has to be found, and if it involves not doing some of the less urgent projects, then so be it.”
Coun Wakefield added that he thinks creating traffic lights at the Stoneygate junction should be more of a priority than the regeneration of Sunderland city centre and, in particular, the area near the Vaux site.
“People’s lives are far more important than a three-lane boulevard,” he said.
Coun James Blackburn, portfolio holder for City Services at Sunderland City Council, said: “A road safety scheme was completed at the A690 Stoneygate junction in 2009.
“The city council continues to monitor traffic data here and across the city.”
Police are asking those who witnessed the crash, which happened at 11.48am, to contact them.
