RESIDENTS of a Wearside care home commemorated D-Day in their own special way.

Those living at Dairy Lane Care Centre, in Houghton, marked the occasion with a day of activities designed to remember those who lost their lives.

Jackie Toolin, activities co-ordinator at the home, said: “It’s been fantastic and the home has been packed out.

“We were talking with the residents after looking through some old newspaper clippings of D-Day and they decided it would be a great idea to hold a celebration to remind them of how big an event it was.”

Staff put on music from the era, while a cake sale was also held.

“We wanted to make it as real we could for the residents so the staff have been dressed in 1940s outfits,” added Jackie.

“Members of Houghton Heritage have also made a visit to present us with a book on D-Day, which we are grateful for.”
