A CADET group is appealing for new recruits to join its ranks.
Durham Army Cadet Force Seaburn (Martin Leake VC) detachment is looking for youngsters aged between 12 and 18 to sign up.
The group helps cadets develop physically, mentally and socially by providing a range of challenging activities.
Sgt Anthony Burnikell said: “We offer a lot of things – not only do we offer military skills, we also offer Btec courses.
“Any course they want to do, we can help find funding and point them in the right direction.”
Durham Army Cadet Force (ACF) has more than 850 cadets based in 41 detachments.
“We have quite a wide interest from lots of different backgrounds,” said Sgt Burnikell.
“The military side brings discipline, loyalty and respect. We arm people with skills for life.”
He added: “The last survey done showed that more than 60 per cent of cadets went into a force.”
The Force operates with the help of 200 volunteers regionally, but Anthony is also looking for new adult faces to get involved.
“They don’t have to be from a military background. We will teach them everything they need to know so they can teach the children,” he said.
The ACF recently celebrated its 150th anniversary and is one of the largest voluntary youth organisations in the United Kingdom, with around 46,000 cadets.
The Seaburn cadets’ group meets every Tuesday and Thursday, from 7pm to 9pm at the TA Centre, Dykelands Road, Sunderland.
