SHOPPERS can get daubed with coloured powder as “the world’s friendliest 5k’ launches in Sunderland.
The American craze – which sees runners getting covoured in coloured powder as the run along a 5k route – is coming to the city in July.
The Color Run has its origins in the ancient Hindu Holi Festival – often known as both the festival of love and colour. More than 170 events are now organised by the Color Run each year across the world.
Registration for the event, which is presented by paint manufacturer Dulux, begins in Sunderland tomorrow with a rainbow-coloured launch day in The Bridges during which members of the public can try out getting powdered.
Jojo from Capital FM’s Breakfast Show and Drivetime presenter Rob Howard will also be at The Bridges meeting members of the public at the event tomorrow from noon and 1pm.
Event organiser Joe Rafferty said: “We hosted four UK events last year and the feedback was incredible, so it was an easy decision to increase The Color Run programme for 2014.
“Our main aim is to help people have fun whilst they exercise. It’s a great event for people who’ve not taken part in organised runs before, as you can go at any pace with a big group of friends.
“As well as the run, the Colour Festival Area at the finish line is an amazing place to hang out, listen to music and get colourful!
Ann Marie O’Riordan, head of marketing at Dulux, added: “We feel passionately about the positive change colour can bring to our lives and the places in which we live.
“We’re delighted to be presenting The Color Run in the UK for the second year – one of the many ways that we’re bringing to life our mission to add colour to people’s lives. We are looking we look forward to spreading the joy of colour at the events throughout the year.”
The Color Run is not timed, meaning groups of friends can walk, jog, dance and party their way along the course at any pace.
At each kilometre, “colour explosions” cover runners and DJs entertain the crowd in the Colour Festival Area after the finish line.
Chris Alexander, chief operating officer at Sunderland Live, said: “We’re delighted to be involved in bringing such a brilliant event to the region for the first time on July 20th. With the amount of fantastic publicity already, we’re really looking forward to what promises to be an amazing day for the city.”
The run starts at 11am on Sunday July 20.
Registration opens tomorrow at www.TheColorRun.co.uk. Entry costs £25 for individuals and £23 p/person for group bookings (there is a £4.99 cost for entry pack postage and packaging).
