OFFICERS investigating the disappearance of a student say it could be some time before the identity of a man recovered from the River Wear is confirmed.

The body of a young man was found in water between Prebends Bridge and Framwellgate Bridge in Durham on Sunday.

Police say no formal identification has yet taken place.

However, the family of missing Durham University student Sope Peters, 20, have been informed of the discovery.

Second year economics student Sope (pictured) went missing on October 29, and was last seen at 11.30pm outside Klute Bar. Police fear he may have fallen into the river and have been carrying out checks in the water as part of the search for him.

The coroner has been informed and an inquest is expected to open in the next few days.
