RESIDENTS are being urged to have their say on the proposed relocation of a popular Post Office.
The branch, in St Luke’s Terrace, Pallion, could be moved from its current location to nearby Midmoor Road under modernisation plans.
The new venue, in a Premier convenience store, will have an open-plan design and extended opening hours.
An eight-week public consultation exercise comes to a close on January 27, with some customers concerned by the proposals.
If given the go ahead, the relocation could take place in March.
Sham Vedhara, who runs an off licence in St Luke’s Terrace, said: “There is a lot of concern over this.
“At the minute, we have an established post office in a good location with good public transport links.
“Customers know where it is and it is often used as a meeting place for older people.
“The other location is set back and out of the way.”
Suzanne Richardson, regional network manager for northern England, said the new-look branch would have a mixture of two traditional screened counter positions and a counter serving point, which provides Post Office services alongside retail transactions during shop opening hours.
Opening hours at the proposed new location would be 7am to 9pm, Monday to Friday, and 8am to 9pm Saturday and Sunday, more than 50 extra hours a week .
“We understand how important having a Post Office is to residents and we are confident that this new modern branch will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future,” she said.
“The modernisation is part of a major investment programme to convert the Post Office network to new-style branches and this investment, the largest in the history of the Post Office, makes a commitment to no more branch closure programmes.”
