Plans submitted for next stage of Dalton Park

PLANS to clear the way for a multimillion pound leisure development have been submitted to Durham County Council.

Peveril Securities, which owns Dalton Park in Murton, has submitted the plans asking for permission to clear man-made mounds of soil on the parkland to make way for its £25million phase two scheme.

The plans set out how the mounds would be remodelled, with material relocated to the south east corner of the site and elsewhere on the land, where it will be landscaped and seeded with grass and wildflowers.

The cleared land would allow a Morrisons supermarket and hotel to be built.

Other businesses to be launched as part of the expansion are a cinema, restaurants including KFC, a non-food shop in the same building as the supermarket and a petrol station.

The former colliery land was redeveloped 10 years ago after the plans for the outlet retail centre were approved following a Government inquiry which overturned a planning inspector’s decision to turn down the application.

The council’s planning officers have said the latest proposals would enable the work to press on without delay.

New jobs and regeneration benefits would be secured.

The plan will be discussed in the council chamber of County Hall in Durham on Tuesday at 1pm.
