PLANS to build a new “extra care” housing complex have been approved by council bosses.
The proposal is to build a 104-apartment development at the junction of Faber Road and Carley Hill Road.
The new facility will include communal spaces and a gardening area, as well as a convenience store, hair salon and restaurant.
Developer Housing 21 has approached Beckwith’s, a not-for-profit catering group which employs disabled people in a bid to improve their independence and employability, to run a restaurant at the site.
Sometimes called “very sheltered housing” or “assisted living”, extra-care housing provides access to 24-hour care and support services for the elderly, while ensuring they still own their own home.
Clare Hemming, development programme manager for Housing 21, said: “We’re delighted that planning permission has been granted for this exciting new extra-care scheme.
“The extra-care housing model is an increasingly popular choice because it allows residents to continue enjoying independent living but with the security of on-site care and support tailored to individual needs.
“This development will provide a real hub for the local community, offering a range of facilities for both residents living here as well as those living nearby.”
Bosses at Beckwith’s are eager to be involved with the new project, having worked with Housing 21 at some of their other developments.
The company employs 42 staff at cafes and restaurants across Wearside. Director Steve Jarvis said: “It is definitely something we would be interested in.
“We provide a range of employment opportunities for people with disabilities, and with this type of arrangement, we can have people with disabilities supporting the elderly.
“We provide that link between formal care and employment. These people have a range of disabilities and needs, and without that support it would be very difficult for them to move into proper employment.”
