A PILGRIMAGE will help plans to build a community garden take root.
About a dozen supporters of the Space 2 Grow campaign set off on a 75-mile walk to Lindisfarne from St Peter’s in Monkwearmouth on Saturday.
They will be walking until Wednesday and any cash they raise will go towards the development of a new community garden at the historic church.
The walkers’ route is following the Bede Way and stopped at St Paul’s in Jarrow before heading for the Northumbrian coast and walking across the tidal pathway to Holy Island. The garden plans are part of a £1million scheme to bring the monastery site to life and highlight its heritage and origins.
A planning application has been submitted to Sunderland City Council, which is backing the project.
