A WEARSIDE runner who conquered the Big Apple is urging others to hit the road to boost a cash-hungry borough charity.

Physiotherapist Michelle Ball, who has worked at St Clare’s Hospice in Jarrow for three years, recently completed the ING New York City Marathon, raising £1,455 for patient care at the hospice.

Super-fit Michelle, from Whitburn, is now hoping others will follow her fund-raising example, and boost the hospice by taking part in the Great North Run next year.

Michelle said: “I’ve taken part in lots of different challenge events, but the atmosphere at the Great North Run is always brilliant.

“As a hospice, we need to raise just under £2m a year to continue running our services, and by getting a place in the Great North Run you can help us.”

The Great North Run ballot opens on January 2, and people can register their interest by visiting www.greatrun.org.

If you would like to register as an independent runner in the Great North Run or make a donation to St Clare’s, call 451 6400 or email fundraising@stclareshospice.co.uk.
