Petition to extend Metro line to Washington

A YOUNG campaigner who wants to see the Metro line extended into Washington, has handed his petition into Parliament.

Hundreds of residents have backed Adam Robson’s calls – also supported by the Echo’s sister paper The Washington Star – to bring the Metro to town.

Washington and Sunderland West MP Sharon Hodgson welcomed constituent Adam in London to accept his 1,500-strong petition, which calls for the system to be extended to the new town.

Adam, who set up the petition in December, has so far seen his calls for the Leamside Line to be brought back into service backed by 1,576 people on the change.org online petition website.

Mrs Hodgson now intends to present the petition formally on the floor of the Commons on Tuesday, and is confident it will add weight to the ongoing campaign.

She said: “Adam’s done a great job drumming up public support for a Metro service for Washington residents, and I was delighted he could come down to Westminster to present me with his huge list of supporters.

“Now is the perfect time to hand in this petition – with Nexus recently outlining plans for three stops in the town, and the North East LEP agreeing to work on a business case for it.

“I’ll be tabling Adam’s petition next week, and hope that this clear show of public support will get the project back on the agenda of Transport Ministers.

“In the meantime, the petition is still open, and I’d encourage anyone who hasn’t signed it yet to do so.”

Introducing the Metro to Washington was one element of ambitious plans unveiled by transport bosses earlier this year.

Tyne and Wear transport executive Nexus said it wanted to significantly extend the network, which would mean:

l The introduction of a circular route connecting Pelaw, Washington, South Hylton, Sunderland and East Boldon, formed by connecting the disused Leamside line and the former Sunderland to Durham rail line west of South Hylton, with a diversion into the town centre;

l Extending the ‘joint running’ arrangements currently used between Pelaw and Sunderland to allow Metro trains to travel as far as Seaham. Up to three additional stations could be provided;

l An ‘on-street’ tram link from Sunderland city centre, heading north to South Shields via Monkwearmouth and Cleadon, and west to Doxford Park and Doxford International.
