AN elderly pedestrian has died following a road smash.

Three vehicles were involved in the collision at about 10.20am yesterday in Silksworth Lane, East Herrington.

The 92-year-old man was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital, were he was later pronounced dead.

The road between Clinton Place and the junction of the B1286 at High Warwick Drive was closed for more than five hours because of the accident.

A passer-by tried to resuscitate the victim before calling paramedics.

Northumbria Police said inquiries are still ongoing regarding the collision and they are appealing for information from anyone who saw the accident.

Witnesses should call police on 101, ext 69191.
