THE red carpet was rolled out as a new multi-million school was officially opened.
Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies officially opened Dene Community School, in Peterlee, as staff and students gathered for the ceremony to launch its new £16million buildings.
Existing parts of the Manor Way site were refurbished and additional areas added to the complex, which was updated as part of Building Schools for the Future project.
Facilities include a new Apple Mac suite, IT rooms and laptop hubs available to all teaching areas, with its design and technology block full refurbished to inspire the next generation of engineers and trades people.
The music rooms have a recording studio and practice area, which will be opened up to community groups..

“The school is wonderful,” said Sharron. “It’s an excellent use of space, its so bright and airy.
“I have been speaking to some students, they have been so polite and respectful, not just to me but to each other, you can see that they have a great sense of pride in their school.”
Chloe James, 15, said: “I think the new school is really spacious and has a good community feel about it.”
Kyle Bagnall, also 15, added: “It’s a fantastic place to learn.”
