ALMOST 40 Wearsiders are still watching black-and-white televisions, according to new figures.
TV Licensing chiefs said there are 13,0000 householders across the UK where the old TV sets are still in use – with 36 in Sunderland.
Colour transmissions started 46 years ago and last year services switched over to digital.
But despite the advances in technology, which saw a rise of flat screen televisions, tablets, laptops and smartphones during the Christmas period, some homes cannot bear to part with their black-and-white television sets.
Lucy Baird, TV Licensing spokeswoman for the North of England, said: “It’s remarkable that with the digital switchover complete, 41 per cent of UK households owning HDTVs and Britons leading the world in accessing TV content over the internet, more than 13,000 households still watch their favourite programmes on a black-and-white telly.”
