To celebrate Mother’s Day and World Book Day, Rosemary Lane Nursery School, invited mums, grans, aunties and female carers to join them at the nursery for our Cuddle Up With A Book Day.

Jill Jones, headteacher at the Easington Village nursery, said: “Each of our families were given a special invitation to come to nursery with their child’s favourite book.

“We have tremendous links with our parents and almost all of our 100 children were represented by a significant adult across the morning and afternoon sessions.

“The parents and carers involved shared a cuppa and homemade cakes baked by our fabulous team of parent and grandparent volunteers.”

The nursery school was transformed with inviting areas for the children and parents to share their stories.

And, they were given access to puppets, story sacks and the nursery library of books.

Jill said: “It was a wonderful success with the children hearing a multitude of different stories, including firm favourites, traditional and many new authors.

“There were lots of opportunities for mums to share stories with their own children and their peers. We even had stories in Japanese shared on the day, giving the children an insight into different print and cultures.”

The headteacher said as a nursery school with children aged from two to five years old, staff feel very strongly about involving families in school life, because they are their first educators.

Jill added: “When we organise events we make sure to personalise them to our setting and our children.

“Dressing up as a book character in nursery is not always the best way to encourage reading and to developed the skills of handling books skills.

“Having your special family member come to nursery and read you your favourite book has a much better, lasting impact.”

World Book Day is a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and most importantly it’s a celebration of reading.

It is the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world.

To mark the day youngsters get a £1 token which they can use to buy a book.
