WEARSIDE energy company workers are celebrating after splashing past their fund-raising target.
About 70 npower employees, including staff based at its Sunderland offices, took part in a jog and dip event in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.
They had initially aimed to raise £5,000 but managed to muster up £6,845.
Customer services staff at Rainton House were among those who braved freezing temperatures and plunged into the North Sea at South Shields, and they are now planning to complete a nerve-racking bungee jump to boost their fundraising drive further.
“The event was brilliant,” said employee Alex Beacock.
“I had loads of fun. It was great to be doing something positive, if not a little foolhardy.”
Staff from the firm’s branches at Peterlee, Thornaby, Leeds and Hull donned fancy dress for the stunt, with customer service director Gareth Pickles leading the group into the sea.
“The event was really fun to do,” said fundraiser Amanda Ridley, also based in Sunderland.
“I was dressed as a yellow crayon and, even though it was cold, people weren’t bothered.
“In the department I work in, we have a colleague who has recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer, and now they are getting support and care from Macmillan.
“With the support of npower and others, it means Macmillan can continue the good work they do, which is to be there for patient and family.”
