BUILDERS and staff at a new city supermarket are helping lay the foundation for better care for seriously-ill children.

Contractors from Bowmer & Kirkland (B&K), working on the new Sainsbury’s site off Wessington Way, have been helping to transport office furniture for the Grace House children’s hospice appeal.

Also, supermarket staff have pledged to support the charity with a year of fund-raising activity.

The charity will benefit from money raised through events at the store, due to open next month, as well as volunteering by staff.

Karen Maclennan, from the Grace House Appeal, said: “We are really grateful for the volunteering by B&K and excited to be receiving support from Sainsbury’s Sunderland North in their first year of operation.

“We would like to thank all the Sainsbury’s colleagues who voted for us.

“We will be planning fund-raising activities with the store over the coming months and we hope customers will support the store’s efforts.”

Store manager Chris Stevens said Grace House had been a popular choice among staff.

“Grace House Children’s Hospice is such a worthy local cause and we’re delighted that it is to become our first Charity of the Year.

“We’ll be letting our customers know of our fund-raising plans when we open in March, and we hope they can join our colleagues in helping to support them.

“We are also in the process of looking for other local causes to become beneficiaries of our food donation initiative once we’ve opened.

“This involves us donating food which is past its sell-by date but is within its use-by date, typically to charities that help low-income families and people who are homeless.”

Any charity interested in being considered for food donation should write to Margaret Cook, PR Ambassador for Sunderland North, c/o Sainsburys, Silksworth Lane, Sunderland, SR3 1PD.
