Museum gets ready to go to war

A NEW exhibition is set to take pride of place at Durham Light Infantry Museum.

Durham Light Infantry Goes to War will be brought to the venue by the National Army Museum (NAM) from July 10 this year.

The exhibition will draw on a host of artefacts, photos and stories from the NAM’s rich collection relating to the local area.

The DLI almost tripled in size during the first few months of the War, increasing from five battalions to fourteen by the end of 1914.

Putting this experience into context of the national army recruitment drive, the exhibition will display the regional recruitment posters used to persuade local young men to join up.

It will also reveal the story of the formation of local ‘Pals Battalions’, such as the Durham, Tyneside and Newcastle Pals.

Those organisations came about as a result of a government drive calling on men to join up with their friends.

The exhibition will run until January next year at the Aykley Heads venue.
