FORMER politician Michael Portillo caused a stir at an Indian restaurant in Sunderland.

The broadcaster and former Defence Secretary became a star attraction at Goa in Seaburn after he turned up at the seafront restaurant on Saturday night.

Mr Portillo was also spotted at Sunderland Railway Station at the weekend filming for documentary series Great British Railway Journeys, in which he travels the length and breadth of the country by train.

Taz Ahmed, owner of Goa, said: “We didn’t even know who he was until another diner said ‘do you know you have a celebrity face in here tonight?’

“I had to go and Google him. After we realised who he was we left him alone to enjoy his meal. He was very friendly and posed with people for pictures.

“He said he came to the restaurant because he’d heard about it on Trip Advisor. He said he’d had Indian food all over the world and ours was among the best he’d had.”
