A ‘DISTRESSED’ woman on board a Metro and a technical problem have both caused misery for commuters in Sunderland this evening.

All trains are now running, but are subject to a 15-minute delay, after a points failure at Park Lane, a Nexus spokeswoman said.

As engineers from Network Rail worked to put the issue right, the delays at one point were as much as 1.5 hours and local bus services were accepting Metro tickets.

Earlier on, at shortly after 7pm the driver of a Metro at South Hylton alerted Nexus bosses after a woman, said to be in a distressed state, kept pushing the emergency button.

“We were worried about her safety and had to call police to have her taken away,” the spokeswoman said, adding that shuttle buses were put in place between Sunderland and South Hylton.

She added: “We would like to apologise to passengers for these delays, but the issues were beyond our control.”
