SUPER dad Bob Berston is such a devoting father that he even tried to give the prize from the Echo’s Father’s Day competition to his beloved daughter.

The 78-year-old was nominated for the “I Love Dad” competition by daughter Kim, 40, who says she couldn’t have asked for a better parent.

Bob, a grandfather-of-four from Sunderland, couldn’t believe he had won, but Kim never had any doubts.

She said: “No matter what happens in life, the ups and downs, my dad always makes me smile.

“Every time I go to his house, I come out laughing. I genuinely could not have asked for a better dad, or a better childhood.”

Bob, a carer for wife Sylvia, 79, who has Parkinson’s-led dementia, was presented with a bottle of Lacoste aftershave, goodies from The Body Shop and a £50 voucher from the Bridges shopping centre.

“He was just overwhelmed,” said Kim, “For him, it’s just being a normal dad – he does not think he is doing anything extra-special. He wanted to spend the voucher on me, but I said ‘no dad, you have it’.”

Kim, who was brought up with sister Jill by their parents in Red House, added: “My life has been fab.

“Dad worked all hours to bring money in to support the family and showed me from a young age what hard work is.”
