COMMUNITY groups are celebrating after they were awarded more than £500,000 between them.
Horden Centennial Centre has received £469,779 from the Big Lottery’s Reaching Communities Fund to revamp of St Mary’s Church Hall to turn it into a flexible space, which can be used by a host of groups.
The venue is due to close at the end of the month to allow refurbishment work to be carried out in March, once tenders have been returned and contractors appointed.
Castle Eden Village Hall, East Durham Citizens’ Advice Bureau, Durham Deafened Support, Murton Welfare Allotment Association and Easington Colliery Methodist Church also received grants of between £7,000 and £10,000 from the Awards for All Fund.
The cash boosts have been welcomed by Easington MP Grahame Morris, who has also encouraged more groups to apply for money.
He said: “The Big Lottery Fund provides grants for a variety of community groups and organisations ranging from £300 for small projects to over a million pounds for large scale projects.
“I hope in 2013 we will see more Big Lottery Funding coming into East Durham, and would urge all community groups and voluntary organisations to consider making an application. I would like to congratulate all those groups that have been successful, and been awarded funding.”
