CARING residents braved the bitter winter weather to take part in a community clean-up.
Members of Shotton Residents’ Group, along with East Durham Homes and clients from Stonham, spent a day clearing leaves and picking up litter in the Church Walk area of Shotton to make the neighbourhood cleaner and safer.
Joyce Lovack, from the residents’ group, said: “It was really nice and thoughtful of young people from Stonham agreeing to help the community.
“They were very polite and helpful at all times. This shows the young people from Stonham want to link in with the community and contribute to it.”
Stonham – the care and support division of Home Group – provides accommodation and support to young people in the village.
They became involved in the joint community project after being invited by Shotton Residents Group and East Durham Homes.
Victoria Colman, Stonham Project Support Worker, said: “The young people who were involved in the ‘tidy up’ exercise really enjoyed the event. They were given a sense of achievement and pride and it was an opportunity for them to help their local community.
“It is important for our young people to be recognised as valued members of the community in Shotton and I think this has proved it.”
After a successful clean-up, the three organisations aim to organise more events like this in the future.
Paul Mains, interim chief executive of East Durham Homes, said: “It’s really important for us as a company to support events that strengthen community bonds.
“By bringing neighbours together to do something positive for the whole area, we can start to break down negative misconceptions and improve the local area.”
