GIGGLERS aim to prove that laughter really is the best medicine.

Healing Opportunities, in Roker Park Road, is holding an open day where those who like to chuckle can sample laughter yoga.

The fun therapy aims to relax and unwind, leaving them happier all round.

The session, next Thursday, will be led by laughter therapy advocate Keith Adams.

Keith, formerly of Usworth, Washington, and a graduate of Sunderland Polytechnic, said: “Laughter in the sessions comes from fun exercises suitable for all in a non-offensive environment.

“It leaves people bursting with energy and exercises to help them laugh more every day.”

These include chanting, clapping and fake laughing.

“It’s about clapping to a rhythm,” said Keith. “Breathing exercises and child-like play.

“Children laugh between 300 and 400 times a day, and adults only laugh between two and three.

“As we grow up, we are told to be more serious, but then people become too serious. We try and capture childlike humour so we jump up and down until people are really laughing.”

The therapy aims to release endorphins, massage the muscles, and lower blood pressure.

Pauline Fraser, assistant manager at Healing Opportunities, said: “Everyone can enjoy the laughter yoga. I took part in one session and it was hilarious.”

The open day will offer visitors other therapies including shiatsu, Indian head massage and reiki. It costs £20, or £15 just for the laughter workshop.

Therapy treatments start from 10am and laughter therapy from 1pm to 3pm.
