LATEST NEWS: Car ruptures gas main in house smash

A MAN has been arrested after a car smashed into a house and ruptured a gas main.

The residents and their neighbours had to be evacuated after the incident in Newcastle Road, Fulwell.

Police cordoned off the street while emergency services dealt with the crash. Gas engineers made the ruptured pipe safe. The incident happened at 2.20am today.

A 40-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking. He is currently in custody helping police with their enquiries.
